In some studies, the differences start at birth. Temple’s work suggests that these differences in brain structure might be evident from birth.
She examined data from the OASIS (Older Adults and Samples Imaging Studies) study, which analyzes the brains of 200 people, ages 67 to 90. This study was also based on images from CT scans and MRI scans.
The results showed that men have more grey matter in their brains than women.
The images also revealed that older men had more grey matter than older women.
The differences between the sexes were greatest between ages 50 and 65.
“There were substantial sex differences in the amount of gray matter in the brain,” Temple told Live Science. “Men had about 9 percent more gray matter than women. [This difference was] significantly larger than the 7 percent difference in white matter.”
However, these differences seem to disappear in the elderly. But Temple’s research indicates that the differences in brain structure begin early in life.
“Although the differences diminish as adults, these observations suggest that childhood is an important period for brain development,” Temple told Live Science. “It is possible that these sex differences arise due to differences in the physical or chemical environment during the crucial period of development. Yet we also need to take into account genetic differences. Brain imaging by itself cannot discern between these possibilities.”
Future research should also look at how the environment might affect brain structure.
“These preliminary findings suggest that men and women have different brain structures, but what is not yet clear is whether the differences are related to sex hormones and how these hormones affect brain development, including sexual differentiation of the brain,” Temple said.A new analysis of the national death certificate data from 2016 shows that 7.5 million people died from treatable, preventable or known fatal illnesses, including cancer and other major illnesses.
This represents an increase of 3.2 million deaths, or 30% in the last decade.
“This is a huge number, and it’s a devastating increase,” wrote Dr. Sophia Bollag, who added, “It’s unacceptable to have that many deaths and to continue to see increases in the number of deaths due to preventable diseases.”
